Tips For Making The Most Out Of Your Storage Unit

by David Johnston

Renting a self storage unit, but discovering that it's filling up faster than you thought? If so, following these tips will help you make the most out of your storage space.

Disassemble Your Furniture

You may be surprised at how much space some furniture takes up when it is fully assembled. That's why it can help to break down furniture when possible to reduce its footprint in the storage unit. This can include doing something as simple as taking the legs off a table and storing it sideways. Just make sure to put the hardware you remove into a bag and carefully attach it to the furniture if you can, or you can label it and put it in a spot where you can reliably find it again when you need it. This will help ensure that you don't lose those screws and bolts before you eventually take the item out of storage.

Store Small Items Inside Large Items

Are you storing a large item, like a refrigerator or dresser? It's possible that you can store some of your small items inside your large item so that you maximize your space. Putting some of your boxes in your refrigerator is going to give you extra room outside it. Just make sure that you prop open the refrigerator door when items are stored inside it, since mold can build up inside it if you are not careful.

Stack Items To The Ceiling

Don't be afraid to tightly pack items up to the ceiling to make the most use out of your square footage inside the storage unit. Just make sure that you are stacking items properly, with the biggest and heaviest items at the bottom. You do not want a heavy box to fall off the top of the stack and injure you or damage the items inside it.

Creatively Make An Aisle

One tip that you may have heard is to create an aisle in your storage unit so that you can easily get to the back of it and reach your boxes. However, this is lost storage space in the unit that could be better used. It's a good idea to place items with creating an aisle in mind. For example, place a rolling cart in the middle of the storage unit that can easily be removed to create an empty aisle area. You can also stack boxes in the middle aisle, since they can easily be moved out of the way using a dolly. As long as you fill in that aisle with items you can easily remove, you can have your aisle and use all of your storage space too.
